The result, after much trial and more than a few errors, was an ex-
hibit stocked with an impressive collection of fishes. The mix eventu-
ally included several giant black sea bass ( Stereolepis gigas ) weighing three
to four hundred pounds and many large white sea bass ( Atractoscion no-
bilis ); leopard sharks ( Triakis semifasciata ) and bat rays ( Myliobatis cali-
fornica ); fine schools of bonito ( Sarda chilensis ) and barracuda ( Sphyraena
californica ); as well as countless smaller species like kelp bass ( Paralabrax
clathratus ), sand bass ( P. nebulifer ), and sargo ( Anisotremus davidsonii ).
Marineland divers, working under the direction of former com-
mercial diver Jake Jacobs, put on regular underwater feeding shows.
The commercial helmet diving gear they used was heavy and seemed
especially so as they walked on the bottom of the tank feeding the fishes.
The gear was not easy to maneuver, and one had to be careful not to
