the suction. Freya experimented with Hamner's tank and found that it
worked splendidly for the fragile, delicately pulsing jellies.
John Christiansen drew up new plans based on Hamner's tank and
we had one of our own fabricated out of clear acrylic. It, too, worked
well and Freya began testing it with a number of di¤erent species of
jellies. She found she could keep animals that before had been impos-
sible to maintain.
AN INNOVATIVE DISPLAY TECHNIQUE
At this point it struck me that this basic design could be modified to
create an exhibit tank that looked, so to speak, as if it wasn't there. The
tank would have a rear-illuminated translucent blue back, to simulate
the blue of the vast ocean, and we could take advantage of the angles
of refraction of light passing between air and water to make the side,
top, and bottom walls of the tank disappear. Like Bill Hamner's orig-
