In-Depth Information
In the days that followed people came in numbers beyond anyone's
wildest dreams—certainly far beyond the highest predictions. The
weeks, and especially the weekends, were incredibly busy, and the aquar-
ium and Cannery Row were packed with visitors. The two most com-
mon complaints were the crowds and the lack of parking.
Only a little over a month before our opening, the white shark had
been swimming around in the Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit. In a
way, it's just as well it didn't survive. If we'd opened with a healthy great
white shark on display, we would have had a logistical disaster on our
hands. I could just imagine the tra‹c jam extending from San Fran-
cisco to Monterey as people flocked to see the first-ever live “Jaws” in
a brand-new aquarium.
Many sta¤ had worked extremely hard on this aquarium for a year
to as many as six years. It was a good feeling to see the success of what
we'd created, but at the same time I think we all felt a bit of a letdown
after the opening—a sort of postpartum depression, if you will. The
anticipation that had kept us going was all of a sudden gone, and there
was nothing to take its place yet. Luckily, the feeling doesn't last long.
