through immersion in hot water. I wanted to get a hot tub for the
volunteers, but I worried that nondivers would consider my re-
quest as a decadent California luxury. I nevertheless went ahead
and got bids on the cost, then submitted my request for the eu-
phemistically named “thermal recovery unit,” with a brief expla-
nation of why it was needed. I waited for some reaction.
A while later my wife, Betty, happened to be riding down the
administration building's elevator with David Packard. He turned
to her and said with a grin, “Tell David he's got his hot tub!” I
was delighted to hear that Packard had seen the value to the aquar-
ium of taking care of our invaluable volunteers. The hot tub is
used frequently by the volunteer divers and has been the site of a
number of post-dive pizza parties.
