wasn't such an ordeal for Betty and me, except for the usual hassle of
selling a house and finding another place to live. After several week-
end trips from Marin County to Monterey to house-hunt we found
the perfect place in Pacific Grove, known as the “Butterfly Town” be-
cause it is a winter home of monarch butterflies. The property had no
lawn (I have a thing about growing lawns in the semidesert of Cali-
fornia), a large garden for vegetables, and a place to park my ski/fishing
boat and camper, and the house had a nice big kitchen.
I remembered that a few years earlier Betty and I had driven to Mon-
terey and Pacific Grove with my sister, Marcia, and her husband, Sir
Guy Lawrence, who were visiting from England. We'd mentioned to
them that someday we wanted to retire here. Well, here we were in 1980,
living on the Monterey Peninsula. Far from being in retirement, though,
I was helping attend the birth of a most ambitious new aquarium.
