MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM
IN 1978, REPORTS BEGAN circulating that plans for an aquarium in
Monterey were being hatched. A number of Academy sta¤ asked me
about it, but I knew nothing more than what the rumor mill was
churning.
Then I got a phone call from Julie Packard in Monterey. She told
me that, indeed, serious plans were afoot for a new aquarium that would
focus entirely on Monterey Bay marine life. She asked if I would con-
sider coming to Monterey to review and discuss their plans. I agreed
to take a look.
A few days later I drove to Monterey. That first meeting was held
in a low wooden building at Stanford University's Hopkins Marine
Station, next to the old Hovden sardine cannery at the end of Can-
nery Row. I was quite familiar with the area, having stored my boat
in the ramshackle Monterey Canning Company building next to Ed
Ricketts's lab some years before. I'd also made countless dives in the
1960s and 1970s for Steinhart Aquarium, Sea World, and my own plea-
sure in the waters around Monterey.
At the meeting were the originators of the project: Nancy Burnett,
Julie's sister; her husband, Dr. Robin Burnett; Dr. Steve Webster; and
Chuck Baxter. Julie and Linda Rhodes, the project manager, were also
