In-Depth Information
coelacanth will ever be kept in an aquarium. However, in September
1997 and July 1998 two coelacanths were captured o¤ Indonesia; this
totally new location means the species is more widely distributed than
previously thought. If other populations are discovered, they may o¤er
an opportunity for an aquarium or research institution to collect and
possibly keep a live one. Time will tell.
The Comorans are practical people, and they eat coelacanths when
caught. Yet they don't specifically fish for them because they aren't that
tasty. One evening, Cici at Hotel Le Coelacanthe prepared us some
coelacanth she'd stashed away in her freezer. We found it to be excel-
lent, though I suspect it was Cici's French culinary skills that made it
so good.
Shortly after we got back to San Francisco, SPOOF (Society for the
Protection of Old Fishes) held its annual meeting, and instead of rub-
ber chicken for the group banquet we dined on coelacanth, sturgeon,
bowfin, and gar, all “old,” primitive fishes. The coelacanth wasn't nearly
as good as Cici's.
