In-Depth Information
That was 1973, the year we were surprised by a totally unfore-
seen event that a¤ected everyone's take on reality: the first seri-
ous gasoline shortage hit the United States, and it scared every-
one, especially Californians, who are married to their cars. There
were long lines and short tempers at the gas stations, many of which
ran dry, and gas prices skyrocketed.
At the time, it looked as if there was going to be a permanent
shortage of fuel that would drastically alter the lifestyle of each
and every American. The fear was that the automobile would no
longer be our ticket to freedom, able to take us wherever our hearts
desired.
As a result of the gas crisis, the San Simeon Aquarium project
was abandoned and I gave up my dream. By the time the gas cri-
sis was behind us, my life had taken another course.
