for contact with nature. Many, if not most, in this giant inland city
had probably never seen the sea or the creatures that live in it. They
may have had television sets, but even if they watched nature shows
on TV, it's not at all the same as seeing the real live animals.
I believe there is an innate need in humans to have some form of
contact with other living beings. This need may explain the popular-
ity of zoos and aquariums in the cities as well as the popularity of keep-
ing animals as pets and even growing potted plants in our homes.
