an unexpected occurrence for this time of year, but we didn't think too
much about it. Just a shower, we supposed. The rain got heavier, though,
and pretty soon we were having to make a run at it to get through some
of the flooded arroyos that crossed the dirt road.
We didn't worry until Ray's little Datsun got halfway through one,
drowned out, and was stuck. A Mexican road crew was watching and
thought it was the funniest thing they had seen all week. They finally
took pity on us and hooked Ray's Datsun to their big road grader and
pulled him out. We thanked them, shared some of our cerveza with
them, and were on our way again.
Eventually we arrived in Punta Colorada in the rain, where we were
greeted by the sight of the resort's sportfishing boats being torn loose
from their moorings by big waves and washing ashore. Despite valiant,
but futile, e¤orts to keep the boats from coming ashore, they hit the
beach, breaking o¤ outdrives, props, and rudders. It was a severe finan-
cial setback for the people of Punta Colorada.
