NO FERRY CROSSINGS
Arriving on the outskirts of Mazatlán we noticed small groups of Mex-
icans, attired in white suits, walking along the roadside toward town.
Many were carrying guitars. Thinking nothing of it, we headed for the
ferry o‹ce. We had work to do, and the sooner we got across to La
Paz, the sooner we could start collecting.
We were greeted at the ferry terminal by a smiling clerk who in-
formed us that there was no space on the ferry for four days. Seeing
our dejected looks, he told us, “Eet is no so bad—Carnival begins
tonight!”
Thinking back, I don't really believe there was no room on that ferry.
I have a strong suspicion they just tie the ferry up and join the party
until Carnival is over. Come to think of it, that's not a bad attitude to-
ward life. We could probably learn something from them.
In any case, we were stuck. What could we possibly do for four days
in Mazatlán while we waited for the ferry? The answer was obvious:
Forget about the delay and throw ourselves into it and enjoy! And we
did— or at least Bob and I did. Poor Kym was miserably sick with the
“turistas” and spent his entire Carnival days and nights alternating be-
tween moaning on his motel bed and running to the bathroom. How-
ever, his moaning failed to dampen our spirits, and we left him there
and caught the bus into town to experience Carnival to the fullest. I
hadn't budgeted for this kind of extracurricular activity, but in an hon-
est attempt to save money we were able to find the largest, cheapest
shots of tequila in all of Mazatlán. From what I remember of it, the
music, singing, and dancing were truly wonderful. The Mexicans knew
how to forget about their hard life, at least for a little while, and they
really let loose and enjoyed themselves.
The highlight of the fiesta was the fireworks show on the last night.
A tall, rickety bamboo structure had been assembled in the center of
the main plaza, and as soon as darkness fell fireworks of all shapes and
colors began whirling, sputtering, and shooting o¤ in the most unex-
pected directions. For the grand finale the entire top of the bamboo
tower, propelled by attached rockets, lifted o¤ and disappeared over
