1 Golden Mount & Wat Saket
BUDDHIST TEMPLE

A less conspicuous stop on the temple itinerary, the Golden Mount is an artificial hill from
which Bangkok appears meditatively serene. Next door, Wat Saket has some interesting
(and sometimes gory) Buddhist murals. Join the candlelit procession to the summit in
November during the annual temple fair. ( ภูเขาทอง & วัดสระเกศ ; Th Boriphat; admission to sum-

2 Wat Suthat

Other than being just plain huge and impressive, Wat Suthat also holds the highest royal
temple grade. Inside the wí·hăhn (sanctuary for a Buddha sculpture) are intricate Jataka
(stories of the Buddha) murals and Thailand's biggest surviving Sukhothai-era bronze
Buddha. Over the road is the Giant Swing (Sao Ching-Cha), site of a former Brahman fest-
ival in honour of Shiva. ( วัดสุทัศน์ ; Th Bamrung Meuang; admission 20B;

Top Tip
Take the Boat
Boats - both the Chao Phraya River Express and the klorng boats - are a steady, if slow, way to reach Banglamphu,
but remember that they only run until about 8pm on weekdays, 7pm on weekends.
