In-Depth Information
Phra Mondop
Commissioned by Rama I, this structure was built for the storage of sacred Buddhist
manuscripts, and the seven-tiered roof, floor woven from strands of silver and intricate
mother-of-pearl door panels make it among the most decadent libraries we've en-
countered. Phra Mondop is closed to the public.
Chakri Mahaprasat
The largest of the Grand Palace buildings is the Chakri Mahaprasat (Grand Palace Hall).
Completed in 1882 following a plan by British architects, the exterior shows a blend of
Italian Renaissance and traditional Thai architecture. The central spire contains the ashes
of Chakri kings; the flanking spires enshrine the ashes of the Chakri princes who failed to
inherit the throne.
Amarindra Hall
Originally a hall of justice, this large, mostly empty hall is used for coronation ceremonies
- the most recent occasion being the current king's coronation in 1950. The golden, boat-
shaped throne looks considerably more ornate than comfortable.
