PARK

Named after the Buddha's birthplace in Nepal, central Bangkok's biggest and most popular
park has nurtured many a bike rider, jogger, đa ̀ ·grôr (a Thai ball game) player and t'ai chi
practitioner - all best observed during the cool morning hours. Likewise, keep your eyes
open for the enormous urban monitor lizards. ( สวนลุมพินี ; bounded by Th Sarasin, Th Phra Ram IV,

MUSEUM

This collection of three wooden houses illustrates an often-overlooked period of Bangkok's
history, the 1950s and '60s. The grounds consist of two handsome wooden homes, both of
which are decked out with their original furniture, and an adjacent museum dedicated to
local history. A visit takes the form of an informal guided tour in halting English, and pho-
tography is encouraged. ( พิพิธภัณฑ์ชาวบางกอก ; 273 Soi 43, Th Charoen Krung; admission free;

Hotel Boats
Getting out on Mae Nam Chao Phraya is a great way to escape Bangkok's notorious traffic and experience the
city's maritime past. So it's fortunate that the city's riverside hotels also have some of the most attractive boats
shuttling along the river (technically for hotel guests, but staff don't generally ask too many questions). In most
cases these free services run from Tha Sathon (also known as Central Pier) to their mother hotel, departing every
10 or 15 minutes. There's no squeeze, no charge and a uniformed crew will help you on and off.
