Golden Buddha
The star attraction at Wat Traimit is the gold Buddha image. Located on the 4th floor of
Phra Maha Mondop, the temple compound's imposing marble structure, the image was
originally 'discovered' some 60 years ago beneath a stucco or plaster exterior when it fell
from a crane while being moved. It's thought that the covering was added to protect the
statue from marauding hordes.
Yaowarat Chinatown Heritage Center
On the 2nd floor of Phra Maha Mondop is this relatively small but engaging museum (ad-
mission 100B; 8am-5pm Tue-Sun) , which houses multi- media exhibits on Chinese immigra-
tion to Thailand, as well as on the history of Bangkok's Chinatown and its residents. Par-
ticularly fun are the miniature dioramas that depict important cultural facets of Thai-
Chinese life.
Phra Buddha Maha Suwanna Patimakorn Exhibition
On the 3rd floor of the marble structure, this museumlike exhibition (admission 100B;
8am-5pm Tue-Sun) recounts how Wat Traimit's Buddha statue was made, discovered and
transported to its current home. If you've ever wondered how to make - or move - a
5.5-tonne gold Buddha statue, your questions will be answered here.
Phra Maha Mondop
In 2009 a new home for the statue was built. Combining marble, Chinese-style balustrades
and a steep Thai-style roof, it's one of the taller buildings in Chinatown, and the golden
spire can be seen from blocks away. Surrounding it is a narrow strip of grass watered via
mist fountains, and the usual Thai temple buildings.
