plant with Hypnum moss and Pellia liverwort; (c)
Polytrichum moss that may be serious in turf
species in the Pellia genus that are recognized by their
thick, flat leaves growing on the surface of pot plant
compost (Figure 17.23). These organisms increase
only when the soil and compost surface is excessively
wet, or when nutrients are so low as to limit plant
growth. Products containing pelargonic acid are
effective against these weeds on pot plants that have
woody stems (but not pot plants with green, non-
woody stems as they may be killed by this chemical).
