Others are held in publicly funded institutions such as
colleges - for example, Sarcococca at Capel Manor
College in North London, Escallonia at the Duchy
College in Cornwall, Penstemon and Philadelphus
at Pershore College and Papaver orientalis at the
Scottish Agricultural College, Auchincruive. Hillier
Gardens in Hampshire alone holds nine genera,
including the witch hazels, many of which are featured
in the winter garden (see FigureĀ 1.15). Rare plants are
identified and classified as 'pink sheet' plants. Plant
Heritage's 'Threatened Plants Project' aims to identify
and assess for heritage value all named British and
Irish plant cultivars and to identify rare and threatened
plants in its collections. It develops conservation plans
with partner organizations fulfilling global targets for
conserving the diversity of plants with cultural and
socio-economic value.
