and zinc in the heavy drinking group were significantly lower than those of the light
drinking group (Table 13.6 ). It was previously reported from the US Department
of Agriculture's Nationwide Food Consumption survey in 1977-1978 that the
nutrient density of diets of drinkers was significantly lower than that of nondrinkers
with respect to protein, fat, carbohydrate, calcium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin A,
and thiamin (Windham et al. 1983 ) .

13.4 Conclusion

In this study, there was no significant difference in dietary taurine intake between
heavy and light drinking groups and heavy drinkers have low dietary quality.
Therefore, continuous nutrition education for heavy drinking Korean male college
students may be needed to improve balanced nutritional status and further studies
such as case-control study or taurine administration study are required to know the
relationship between dietary taurine intake and alcohol consumption.
