Grid-Enabled Databases: A set of Database
Management Systems (DBMS) which are physi-
cally distributed and are queried by grid users
through the use of a middleware together with a
Grid Resource Management System.
Quality-of-Service (QoS): The term was first
coined in the networking-related field in order to
identify the ability of a certain technology to do
resource reservation in order to provide different
priority to distinct applications or users. More
recently, it can also be used as a users' satisfac-
tion degree or the ability to provide predictable
performance levels that are according to users'
expectations.
Service Level Agreement (SLA): An agree-
ment that is firmed between a service provider
and a service consumer, and which defines the
service levels (possibly in terms of Service Level
Objectives) that should be provided for several
characteristics (like performance and availabil-
ity) of the provided services. It may also define
guarantees and penalties (for the case of non
compliance with the SLA).
Service Level Objective (SLO): It is a tar-
get value used to measure the performance of a
service provider in what concerns to a specific
characteristic, like response time or throughput.
Its definition may also contain information about
how the SLO is measured and the measurement
period.
