In-Depth Information
The giant 23 meter (75 ft.) high Obelisk of Luxor occupies the center of the Place de la
Concorde
The Egyptian obelisk that occupies the central position in the Place de la Concorde was
originally located at the entrance to the Temple of Luxor in Egypt and was brought to Paris
in 1833.
To sum up: The first monument in the center of this square was a bronze statue of Louis
XV on horseback, followed by the guillotine that beheaded not only King Louis XVI and
Queen Marie-Antoinette but many of the French, particularly Parisian, nobility. Fifty years
later, after the revolution and Napoleonic Wars, the Egyptian Obelisk that today still dom-
inates the square was brought from the Nile.
