Pont Alexandre III at night
The Bridge only took two years for the engineers Résal and Alby to build, and was opened
to the public at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
You can easily spot the four 17 meter high corner pillars, bearing the four gilded bronze
equestrian groups that represent Pegasus held by Fame. Pegasus the winged horse is one of
the best known creatures in Greek mythology. Each of those pillars has a specific name and
also stands for a specific period of French history.
Pillar one is called “Fame of Agriculture” with the sculpture “La France Pacifique” -
”Peaceful France” at the base.
Pillar two is called “Fame of Arts” with the sculpture “Charlemagne's France” at the base.
Pillar three is called “Fame of Battle” with the sculpture “La France de la Renaissance”-
“France in the Renaissance” at the base.
Pillar four is called “Fame of War” with the sculpture “Louis XIV's France” at the base.
