The Gardens:
Louis XIV commissioned André Le Nôtre with the design and laying out of the gardens
of Versailles in 1661. The King believed that the gardens were just as important as the
Château itself. It took forty years to complete the gardens with the works being undertaken
at the same time as those for the palace. A large number of statues and fountains were built
and the whole construction of the gardens required an enormous workforce, vast amounts
of earth and trees conveyed by cart from all the provinces of France. Thousands of men
took part in this vast enterprise. Let's have a look at some of the highlights of the Gardens
