The Palace:
TheChâteaudeVersaillesisoneofthemostbeautifulachievementsof18th-centuryFrench
architecture and has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List for more than 30 years; it is
a must see for every Paris visitor.
The area was initially only Louis XIII's hunting lodge, but later in 1682 became the court
and government of France when his son Louis XIV, the famous Sun King, started to trans-
form and expand the site to a larger complex. All three French kings who lived there added
improvements to make it more beautiful until the French revolution swept the monarchy
out of the palace ending the royal dominance in 1789. The château lost its standing as the
officialseatofpowerbutnowadaysservesitsnewroleastheMuseumofHistoryofFrance.
