Top 30 Attraction 23 Montmartre
Montmartre is not only the name of a 130 meters high Hill, but also gave its name to the sur-
rounding district. Most Paris visitors will primarily know Montmartre for the white-domed
Basilica of the Sacré Cœur, but it has way more to offer. It is not only home to the Basilica
and a lovely neighborhood, but is also a famous nightclub district.
Montmartre has always been a district that attracted artists. It became the principal artistic
center at the end of the 19th century. The list of artists who used to live in this district
reads like the Who's Who ; Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Vincent van Gogh,
Amedeo Modigliani and Piet Mondrian, to mention only a very few of the best known.
