Once Paris cemeteries became overcrowded in the late 1700s, the Government of Paris de-
cided to move the dead underneath the city to this final resting place, south of the former
City Gate.
The remains of more than six million people are piled up in this unique cemetery which is
also known as l'Empire de la Morte, the Empire of Death.
