In-Depth Information
The Emperor Napoleon (1769 - 1821) became an important leader in the latter stages of
the French Revolution and its associated wars in Europe
Napoleon implemented a wide array of liberal reforms across Europe and is most re-
membered for his role in leading France against a series of coalitions in the Napoleonic
Wars. He was very successful in battle and gained control over most of continental Europe.
He was driven to spread the ideals of the French Revolution, known as the legal code or
Napoleonic Code. This Code positively influenced numerous civil law jurisdictions world-
wide and still has importance today in a quarter of the world's jurisdictions.
He was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815 and spent the last 6 years of
his life in exile on the island of Saint Helena where he died on the 5th of May 1821. The
remains of Napoleon were brought back to France after seven years of negotiations with
the British Government in 1881. His tomb was placed in the center of the dome where it
still stands today.
Napoleon is still seen as one of the greatest commanders in history and remains one of the
most studied personalities in all of history.
