Top 30 Attraction 20 Les Invalides (Army Museum and Napoleon's Tomb)
Les Invalides is the shortened form of “Hôpital des Invalides” meaning “The Hospital for
Invalids”. The complex's original purpose was that of a hospital and a retirement home for
war veterans.
Construction started in 1671 and just 6 years later the complex stood finished.
A veterans' chapel, and a private royal chapel, the magnificent “Église du Dôme” were ad-
ded to the complex in the following years. The royal chapel with its golden dome is one
of the finest examples of French Baroque architecture and a must see for every visitor. The
Dome of the Royal Chapel was inspired by the grand St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Les Invalides is a complex of buildings famous for containing a military museum, several
monuments and, last but not least, Napoleon's tomb.
