In-Depth Information
One of the original drawings out of a total of 1,700 general drawings and 3,600 detailed
drawings
The finished components, some already riveted together into sub-assemblies, arrived on
horse-drawn carts from the nearby factory and were first bolted together, the bolts being
replaced by rivets as construction progressed. Some of the local press were convinced that
this project could not succeed due to the enormous dimensions and produced sensational
headlines like "Eiffel Suicide!" and "Gustave Eiffel has gone mad: he has been confined in
an Asylum”.
Construction involved more than 300 local workers but despite the fears of the press con-
struction progressed as planned and only one worker died thanks to Eiffel's stringent safety
precautions.
