Top 30 Attraction 16 Palais Garnier - Opera National de Paris
Palais Garnier is one of the world's most famous - if not the most famous- Opera House.
It was built between 1861 and 1875 in a monumental, typically Beaux-Arts, style and was
originally called “Salle des Capucines”. It soon became known as the Palais Garnier in re-
cognition of its Architect, Charles Garnier, and its truly opulent design. It is said that Palais
Garnier was the most expensive building of the time. When you enter this palace, this un-
questionable masterpiece of art, then you will fully understand why the costs were so exor-
bitant.
The Palais Garnier is nowadays a symbol of Paris, like the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, L'Arc
de Triomphe and the Sacre Coeur.
It is the original set of the novel “The Phantom of the Opera” written by Gaston Leroux in
1910, and later adapted in films and by Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular musical, which has
been shown in many countries all over the world.
