Top 30 Attraction 15 Centre Georges Pompidou
The Georges Pompidou Centre is the place to go for modern art in Paris. This is definitely
a different kind of museum experience and you already know this before entering the build-
ing! It has a unique, special and crazy architecture.
Centre Georges Pompidou
The Centre Pompidou is named after the former French President, Georges Pompidou. Con-
struction started in 1971 but it was not finally completed until 1977. The designer team was
international with oneIrishman, three Brits, two Italians butnoFrench, the team having won
a competition to build a new modern museum in Paris. The whole idea of the design is to
put everything that is normally inside a building on the outside. You can see, for example,
staircases and the heating on the outside. In fact, the Centre Pompidou's detractors routinely
call the building an “oil refinery”.
