Top 30 Attraction 14 Concièrgerie - a Former Royal Palace and Prison
This former prison and part of the former royal palace is located on the west of the Île de la
Cité and is now the Palais de Justice. The Concièrge, or keeper, was appointed by the king
and was responsible for policing within the palace walls.
During the French Revolution, hundreds of prisoners were held in the Concièrgerie, includ-
ing Marie-Antoinette. Most of them were taken from the Concièrgerie to be executed on the
guillotine at a number of locations around Paris. The exterior of the building along the Seine
is just amazing but the inside is not as exciting as there is not much to see beside the tiny
cell of Marie Antoinette, who was the Queen of France from 1774 to 1792.
For those who read detective fiction, this was where the famous Superintendent Maigret was
based, in the Palais de Justice. There is even a plaque on the wall outside!
