Project versus Manufacturing
Anybody can argue that software development/test engagements are projects. Then
how can you think of them as manufacturing activities? After all there is a vast dif-
ference between a project and a manufacturing setup!
To elaborate, let us discuss first some concepts in projects and manufacturing
and compare the characteristics that make a project a project and a manufacturing
process a manufacturing process.
12.5.1 Project
Projects are generally done in longer duration. A project can last from a few days to
more than 2 to 3 years. Each project is different from any other project. You form
a team to execute a project, and after the project completes, the team is disbanded.
For each project, you plan for and procure resources, material, labor, know-how,
and so on (see Figure 12.16) .
12.5.2 Manufacturing
Products that are being manufactured do not take much time. They may take a
few seconds to a few days. Products are manufactured in mass numbers running
in sometimes millions per day. Manufacturing processes are repeated continu-
ously. There is no difference between two products if the setup of machines has not
changed. Whereas projects can be termed as one of a kind, manufacturing is many
of one kind.
