Notable People in the History
of China
Amherst, Lord (1773-1857): British diplomat who attempted unsuc-
cessfully in 1816 to obtain diplomatic and trade concessions from the
Qing dynasty.
An Lushan (703-757): General in eighth-century Tang China whose
rebellion shook the Tang to its very foundations and began a long
period of decline for the dynasty.
Arrigo, Linda Gail (Ai Linda; 1949-): American human rights
campaigner and researcher. After graduating from the Taipei American
School in 1966, she made political activism and academic research
her life's work. For her involvement in the Kaohsiung Incident, the
Kuomintang deported her as a foreign political subversive on Human
Rights Day (December 10), 1979. She was not allowed to return to the
island until after its democratization in the 1990s. An unflaggingly ener-
getic figure, Arrigo today continues living and working in Taiwan and
is involved in an endless string of causes, now particularly environmen-
tal ones. Today she is openly critical of her ex-husband, Shih Ming-teh.
Arrigo is very widely respected and thanked in Taiwan for her human
rights work on the island.
