marrow. This removal causes a “disuse-pattern” osteopenia characterized by widening of the mar-
row cavities and thinning of cortical bone, as well as enlarged pores and thinning and fracture of
the trabeculae of cancellous bone. This is the physiological basis for our computational simulations
of trabecular and cortical osteoporosis induced by mechanical disuse.
