In-Depth Information
Dublin Castle. Photo by William Murphy
This castle was built in the 13th century on a site previously settled by the Vikings. In the
middle ages, the original castle served as a fortress. At some point it functioned as a pris-
on, treasury, courts of law and the seat of the English Administration for 700 years. The
British formally handed power over to the Irish in a stirring ceremony right in the castle's
courtyard. Dublin Castle is now used for state functions, receptions and inaugurations. On
occasion, Dublin Castle may be closed to the public to give way to government business so
it would be advisable to call first before visiting.
