St. Michan's Catholic Church. Photo by William Murphy
A sacred destination built on the site of a Danish chapel founded in 1095, this church served
as the only parish church on this side of the Liffey. It was built to serve the Viking popula-
tion expelled from within the city walls. This church was rebuilt in 1685 and is now one of
the popular attractions in Dublin.
Getting inside the church will let you see its notable interiors of fine woodwork, a large or-
gan from 1724, a Penitent's Stool, and a chalice dating from 1516. But the main highlight
that should not be missed here is the burial vault located underneath the church. If you have
the interest and the nerve to do it, try exploring this part of the church. Here, centuries-old
bodies remain intact because of the dry atmosphere. Dusty corpses are lined up in open
coffins and legend has it that Bram Stoker's Dracula was inspired in part by his frequent
childhood visits to this vault.
