Part VI
Theories in Learning to Rank
In this part, we will focus on the theoretical issues regarding learning to rank.
Since ranking is different from regression and classification, previous learning the-
ories cannot be directly applied to ranking and the development of new theories is
needed. In this part, we will introduce the recent advances in statistical learning the-
ory for ranking, including statistical ranking framework, generalization ability, and
statistical consistency of ranking methods.
After reading this part, the readers are expected to understand the big picture of
statistical learning theory for ranking, and know what has been done and what is
still missing in this area.
