The Growing Cast of the Evolutionary Play
Alien predators and parasites are making diverse evolutionary adjustments
to their new prey and host environments. Aquatic and terrestrial verte-
brates, in particular, have shown patterns of rapid evolution in response to
prey size and type. Not to be outdone in this regard, alien agents of plant
and animal disease, together with animals that act as their vectors, have
begun to participate in the evolutionary play. We shall examine patterns
of evolution of these species in the next chapter.
