non-regular hexahedral elements could be retrieved from the tetrahedral mesh by some
shape identification and topological searching algorithms. The resulting mesh consists of
a mixture of hexahedral and tetrahedral elements. To restore mesh compatibility between
hexahedral and tetrahedral elements, pyramid elements are introduced at the interfaces
between hexahedral and tetrahedral elements.
The mesh-merging algorithm provides a means to combine, modify and insert additional
features to existing hexahedral meshes. It is also a powerful tool to create new meshes from
existing hexahedral and tetrahedral meshes. The merging algorithm is reliable and efficient,
