Figure 4.38 Mesh of 5000 triangles.
By the definition of the conformity coefficient, it is always smaller than or equal to 1, and
sometimes it appears to be much smaller than 1 as short edges are often used to improve the
quality of the mesh. The completed anisotropic mesh shown in Figure 4.39 consists of 4556
nodes and 8934 triangles. As for the quality of the mesh: the geometric mean α-quality =
0.518, the minimum α-quality = 0.0117, the mean conformity coefficient = 0.852 and the
minimum conformity coefficient = 0.0434.
The parametric curved surface produced by the mapping of the anisotropic unit metric
triangular mesh is shown in Figure 4.40. It is seen that relatively well-shaped triangles are
resulted in mapping the triangles of the parametric domain onto the curved surface, which
could be further improved by an optimisation process described in Section 4.2.13. Even
though many iterations are used in various stages including the subdivision of boundary
segments, the introduction of interior points and the creation of the insertion cavity, aniso-
tropic meshing is basically linear as searching is not necessary in DT, and the number of
iterations for each individual process is more or less a constant.
