In-Depth Information
North Jiangxi Road
This is another fun strip, always alive with action. Scooters push through the crowds
of pedestrians, while the street sides are lined with vendors selling fresh sugar-cane
juice, stinky tofu and other snacks. Note the distinctive old house at No 174, al-
legedly the residence of Lotus, a gangster-police inspector's concubine, with the tra-
ditional characters (Love Lotus Residence) above the door.
Clothing Market
Qipu Market ( 168 & 183 Qipu Rd; 7am-5pm) is where the masses come shopping for
clothes and shoes. Consisting of two rabbit warren-like department stores surround-
ing the N Henan Rd intersection, it's one big 'everything must go now' sale. Haggle
hard.
Post Museum
It may sound like a yawner, but this is actually a pretty good museum (250 N Suzhou Rd;
9am-5pm Wed, Thu, Sat & Sun) , where you can learn about postal history in imperial
China and view rare stamps (1888-1978). It's located in a magnificent 1924 post of-
fice, with views from the rooftop garden (closed at time of writing).
