Chinese Seal Gallery
Although obscure, this gallery provides a fascinating glimpse into the niche art form of
miniature carving. Seals (chops) are notable both for the intricacy of their design and the
special script used on the underside, which is known to only a handful of artisans and cal-
ligraphers. Look for the two orange soapstone seals that feature incredibly detailed land-
scapes in miniature.
Minority Nationalities Art Gallery
Save some energy for the Minority Nationalities Art Gallery, which introduces visitors to
the diversity of China's non-Han ethnic groups, totalling (officially) some 40 million
people. Displays focus mainly on dress, from the salmon fish-skin suit from Heilongjiang
and the furs of the Siberian Oroqen, to the embroidery and batik of Guizhou's Miao and
Dong.
Ming & Qing Furniture Gallery
This 4th-floor gallery features elegant rose- and sandalwood furniture from the Ming dyn-
asty, and heavier, more baroque examples from the succeeding Qing dynasty. Several
mock offices and reception rooms offer a glimpse of wealthy Chinese home life.
Ancient Chinese Jade Gallery
The most important precious stone in China, jade use dates back some 5000 years. This
gallery introduces pieces such as early mystical totems and symbols (such as the
bi,
or
'jade discs', used to worship heaven), ritual weapons and jewellery. Bamboo drills, abras-
ive sand and garnets crushed in water were used to shape the pieces.
