Toilets in hotels are generally sitters, but expect to find squatters in many public toilets.
In all but the cheapest hotels it's safe to flush toilet paper down the toilet. If you see a
small waste-paper basket in the corner of the toilet, that is where you should throw the toi-
let paper. Tampons always go in the basket.
The Chinese characters for men and women are (men) and (women).

you require. You can also pick up free maps of Shanghai and the metro at the airports.

sibly the most useful telephone number in Shanghai - it can even give your cab driver dir-
ections if you've got a mobile phone.

When presenting your business card, proffer it with the first finger and thumb of both hands (thumbs on top).
Don't stick your chopsticks vertically into your rice, but lay them down on your plate or on the chopstick rest.
