Top Tip Remember to always retrieve your card after using an ATM. You can access
your cash without taking your card back, hence it's easy to forget that it's in the machine.
The Chinese currency is known as Renminbi (RMB). The basic unit of RMB is the yuan

It's easiest to use cash in Shanghai; ATMs that take foreign cards are widespread. Look
for the Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC and HSBC, many
of which have 24-hour ATMs. Many top-end hotels, shopping malls and department stores
also have ATMs.
Credit cards are accepted more in Shanghai than elsewhere in China. Most tourist hotels
will accept major credit cards, as will banks, high-end restaurants and international
boutiques.

Chinese chain hotels such as Motel 168 and Jinjiang Inn are generally of reasonable quality and considerably
cheaper than most other Shanghai hotel rooms.
A handful of bars and cafes around town screen weekly films for free. Check local mags for the monthly sched-
ule.
Always check out malls for convenient and relatively inexpensive dining options.
