Gay & Lesbian Shanghai
Shanghai's gay scene is low profile: the Chinese are a naturally undemonstrative
people, their culture is conservative and the Communists put gay pride way down
on their wish list. With considerable stigma attached to homosexuality, openly
coming out is far more difficult in Chinese society than it is elsewhere in the
world. Yet, as a rapidly liberalising city, Shanghai is a natural destination for Ch-
ina's gays and lesbians. City Weekend runs a bimonthly gay and lesbian column.
