Bubbling Well Road Apartments
One of the most delightful surviving new-style lilong (alley) housing complexes in
Shanghai, Bubbling Well Road Apartments consists of three-storey red-brick houses
built between 1928 and 1932. It's a great spot to observe daily residential life and ex-
plore a new crop of tiny ground-floor cafes and boutiques.
Sun Court
Across the street from Bubbling Well is Sun Court (651 Weihai Rd) , a multi-storey
apartment building completed in 1928. Although it was named after real estate mogul
Sun Chunsheng (1899-1974), the Chinese translator mistakenly used ('sun' in the
sky) instead of (Sun's name) when assigning the Chinese name. Peek into the leafy
inner courtyard.
Mao Zedong's Former Residence
Mao lived here ( Nos 5-9, 120 N Maoming Rd; admission free; 9-11am & 1-4pm; W Nanjing Rd)
in the latter half of 1924 with his second wife, Yang Kaihui, and their two children.
The residence is a beautiful example of shikumen (stone-gate house) architecture.
Passport required for entry.
Tea Shop
The Xiao Ye Tea Shop ( 686 Weihai Rd; 7.30am-9.30pm) has a good collection of pu'erh
(aged fermented tea from Yunnan) cakes and bricks lining the walls, as well as loose-
leaf oolong, white and herbal teas for sale. The back room also sells teapots and
utensils.
North Shaanxi Road
The garden residence (1918) at No 186 once belonged to Wuxi native Rong
Zongjing, one of Shanghai's most powerful industrialists at the time. Rong
Zongjing's nephew, Rong Yiren, was one of the rare individuals with a capitalist
