ShanghART
The most established gallery here, the 17-year-old ShanghArt ( www.shanghartgallery.com ; Bldgs
16 & 18) was founded by Swiss-born Lorenz Helbling in 1996. It now has two big, dramatic
spaces to show the work of some of the 40 artists it represents, including M50 pioneers
Ding Yi and Zhou Tiehai.
island6
The top-notch and provocative island6 ( www.island6.org ; 2nd fl, Bldg 6) is an art collective that
focuses on collaborative works created in a studio behind the gallery. Known as Liu Dao
in Chinese, the studio consists of an international (and rotating) group of artists and tech-
ies, and often experiments with media such as LED art, photography and digital works.
m97
Located across the street from M50, m97 ( www.m97gallery.com ; 2nd fl, 97 Moganshan Rd) is the
largest photography gallery in Shanghai, representing some two-dozen China-based pho-
tographers. Expect thought-provoking and excellent-quality exhibits year round, with
styles that range from portraits to landscapes to conceptual. The entrance can be tricky to
locate.
Other Galleries
Other notable galleries include Other Gallery ( www.othergallery.com.cn ; Bldg 9) , which first
opened in Beijing in 2009 before setting up in Shanghai, and twocities
( www.twocitiesgallery.com ; 2nd fl, Bldg 0) , which features sculpture, generally in glass, ceramics or
lacquer, and jewellery. They also host occasional music performances and film screenings.
Huang Yunhe's OFoto ( www.ofoto-gallery.com ; 2nd fl, Bldg 13) features contemporary photo-
graphy exhibitions.
