Shikumen Open House Museum
This invitingly arranged and restored two-storey stone-gate house ( Xintiandi North Block, No
25; admission ¥20; 10.30am-10.30pm) is decorated with period furniture and infused with the
charms of yesteryear Shanghai. Peek into the minute, wedge-shaped tingzijian room on
the landing, which used to be rented out to cash-strapped writers and other penurious ten-
ants.
Dining
The drinking and dining venues are wedged in cheek by jowl and are what make Xintiandi
tick. You can find plenty of coffee and comfort food if that's what you're after, but don't
overlook the superb Shanghainese options such as Xinjishi ( Click here ) and Ye Shanghai
( Click here ) . For dumplings and dim sum, head to Din Tai Fung ( Click here ) or Crystal
Jade ( Click here ) .
Shopping
Window shoppers can make a fun afternoon of it here. See Click here f or selected stores.
Site of the 1st National Congress of the CCP
The communist narcissism and back-slapping might be irritating to some people, but this
lovely shikumen house ( Xintiandi North Block, 76 Xingye Rd; admission free; 9am-5pm, last entry 4pm)
is immortalised as one of China's holiest political shrines, where the Chinese Communist
Party (CCP) was founded on 23 July 1921. Bring your passport.
Top Tips
The complex is divided into a North Block and a South Block. The North Block is where most of the action is;
the South Block is less appealing but has some notable shopping and dining options in the two malls at its south-
ern end.
