Step Seven:
Go under the Filter menu, under Blur,
and choose Gaussian Blur. Enter 17 as
your Radius (okay, it doesn't have to be
17—choose any amount of blur you like.
The higher the number, the softer your
shadow will be). Now click OK to soften
the edges of your black rectangle.
Step Eight:
Now take the Rectangular Marquee tool
again and draw a rectangular selection
that's offset up and to the left from the
black rectangle (as shown here). Then,
press the Delete key to knock that area
out of the black rectangle (as I did here).
Now you can deselect.
