In-Depth Information
When you crop a photo using the Crop Overlay tool in the Develop module,
the area that will get cropped away is automatically dimmed to give you a
better idea of how your photo is going to look when you apply the final crop.
That's not bad, but if you want the ultimate cropping experience, where
you really see what your cropped photo is going to look like, then do your
cropping in Lights Out mode. You'll never want to crop any other way.
Lights Out
Cropping Rocks!
Step One:
To really appreciate this technique,
first take a look at what things look like
when we normally crop an image—lots
of panels and distractions, and the area
we're actually cropping away appears
dimmed (but it still appears). Now let's
try Lights Out cropping: First, click on
the Crop Overlay button to enter crop-
ping mode. Now press Shift-Tab to hide
all your panels.
Step Two:
Press the letter L twice to enter Lights
Out mode, where every distraction is
hidden, and your photo is centered on
a black background, but your cropping
border is still in place. Now, try grabbing
a corner handle and dragging inward, and
watch the difference—you see what your
cropped image looks like live as you're
dragging the cropping border. It's the
ultimate way to crop (it's hard to tell
from the static graphic here, so you'll
have to try this one for yourself—you'll
never go “dim” again!).
